Men and women from their 40s to 60s opt for these procedures to turn back the hands of time for a youthful look. However, millions of people are taking action much earlier in order to slow and prevent these visible signs of aging. With the wrinkle-fighting results that Botox® provides without incisions, people are becoming much more proactive in the fight against visible signs of aging.

New Youth-Enhancing Procedures: Beyond the Scope of Restylane, Botox and Other Popular Facial Rejuvenation Techniques

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

RestylaneMany individuals struggle with early signs of aging and the telltale signs are often more visible on the face than any other area of the body. The plastic surgery industry is continually expanding its selection of youth-enhancing procedures to include a wide variety of options for consumers eager for facial rejuvenation.

“Twenty years ago, there was only one remedy for facial aging, [facelifts],” said Dr. Stephan Baker, a Coral Gables plastic surgeon and spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. “Today we have a whole spectrum of how we can approach aging.”

While injectable dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane, or muscle relaxers such as Dysport and Botox have become irrefutably popular, cutting edge procedures such as injecting fat or stem cells, and ultrasound technology are making waves as effective facial rejuvenation tools.

According to Miami plastic surgeon, Dr. Constantino Mendieta, fat grafting can be a natural way to add volume to an aging face.

The process first involves removing a small amount of fat from a patient’s inner knees or lower stomach. The fat is then combined with a small amount of blood from the patient which aids in the long-term survival of the fat. The fat can then be injected into several facial areas include the lips, nasolabial folds (skin folds that run from the corners of the mouth to each side of the nose), the hollows of the eyes or the jaw line.

Another Miami plastic surgeon, Dr. Leonard Tachmes, is utilizing a similar technique to inject a patient’s own stem cells into his or her face. Full results can take up to a month, but Tachmes claims that the stem cells “stimulate increased blood supply to the area, and stimulate collagen formation to make the face look fuller and healthier.” It is important to note that stem cells are not yet a scientifically proven method of facial rejuvenation.

Another new youth-enhancing method to recently hit the Miami market is Ulthera, an FDA approved device that utilizes ultrasound waves to tighten the jowls of the face. Heat produced by the ultrasound waves cause collagen in the face to shrink, ultimately causing the skin to tighten. Results can take up to three months.

“Collagen is like a spring — like a helix, and whenever you heat it, it shortens the length of the collagen which causes tightening of the skin,” says Dr. Leslie Baumann, chief executive of the Baumann Cosmetic and Research Institute of Miami Beach.

Whether you’re electing to undergo well-known facial rejuvenation procedures such as Botox or Restylane injections, or you’re choosing a newer procedure, make sure to do your research first. A savvy consumer should always seek out a board certified plastic surgeon with significant experience in the target area.

New Study Examines Effectiveness of Botox, Liposuction and Other Cosmetic Surgery

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Selecting the best cosmetic surgery for your needs can quickly switch from passive browsing to painstaking research.  Should you get a surgical facelift or tighten your skin with a laser? Is liposuction the answer, or would it be more effective to freeze your fat cells? These are the type of questions plaguing plastic surgery consumers and unfortunately comparative research for many surgical procedures is sparse.

A recent study published by Murad Alam, MD, chief of cutaneous and aesthetic surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the latest issue of Dermatologic Clinics provides some insight for both physicians and patients. The report, which compiled data from 98 studies, compared the effectiveness of various competing cosmetic dermatology procedures.

See some of Alam’s findings listed below:

Liposuction: According to Alam, Tumescent liposuction is a very safe option. For this form of liposuction, a physician injects fluid into the fat removal area. Traditionally, excess bleeding has been a worrisome complication of liposuction, but not with this specific form because the anesthetic used prevents bleeding.

Fat Freezing: This procedure, which kills fat cells using a device comprised of two cooling plates that fit around fat on the stomach or thigh areas, is a promising new tool. However, Alam cautions that there is little known about its level of efficacy across patients or how long the results will last.

Botox Injections: Botox has been a popular procedure for nearly 20 years and research has shown that it is a safe option, unlikely to cause any serious reactions.

Low-Level Laser Light for Fat Removal: Knowledge of this device and its level of efficacy are limited. While it has been deemed safe to use in cosmetic patients, there is very little research on whether it’s an effective method or if any results yielded will last long term.

Non-Invasive Skin Tightening: This procedure utilizes radio-frequency energy, infrared light or ultrasound to shrink the skin. Research on this procedure, like many others reviewed, is particularly slim. According to Alam, “Some tightening definitely occurs.” However, again there is little known about its level of efficacy across patients or how long the results will last. One prior study has shown this procedure to be one-third as effective as a surgical facelift.

In his report, Alam stressed that more comparative research must be done for popular cosmetic surgery and procedures.  Finding accurate information on many of these procedures can be an extremely difficult task for potential patients. Seeking out an experienced physician should always be your number one goal when electing to undergo cosmetic surgery.

Botox Injections

With Christmas day just around the corner, shoppers’ emotions are running high as they rummage through vacant store aisles and surf the internet for last minute shipping dates. Finding the perfect present for the man or woman who has everything can be stressful, especially when time is scarce. But surprisingly enough, this year’s gift giving dilemmas could be solved with a simple call to a local plastic surgeon’s office.

More and more men and women are choosing to purchase gift certificates or surgical consultations for loved ones this Christmas. Popular procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox injections are topping many Christmas lists this year according to Tampa based plastic surgeon Dan Diaco, MD.

“It makes a wonderful present. Most girls are very, very, very, happy to get something like this under the tree,” says Diaco.

Men are also happy recipients of plastic surgery gifts for Christmas. According to Diaco, the most requested procedures for men are Botox injections, frequently referred to as “bro-tox.” Men also lean towards chemical peels which can treat a variety of superficial skin problems such as sun damage and fine wrinkles, as well as Juvederm injections which can reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and add volume to the skin.

Diaco insists that the end results are priceless: “Their face lights up. They get excited. It changes their lives.”

Plastic surgery may be the perfect gift for your “someone special” this year, but remember that it’s important to seek out a board certified plastic surgeon. Thorough surgical consultations and evaluations are essential to determine if a patient is an ideal candidate for plastic surgery.

If you’re planning to give the gift of cosmetic enhancement this year, it’s best to give an envelope filled with informational brochures because in most cases, you will not be able to purchase the procedure without a patient consultation first.
