Breast Implant Removal or Revision in Portland & Lake Oswego

People may choose breast implant removal or revision for several reasons, including changes in aesthetic preferences, a desire for a different size or shape, or lifestyle changes where implants may no longer fit their needs.

Implant Removal With Lift

Depending on how long you had your implants, they may have caused your skin to become stretched or sagged. If this is the case, you may want to consider getting a breast lift at the same time as having your implants removed. A lift involves removing small amounts of breast tissue, skin, and fat to lift your breasts higher on your body, as well as create a proportional, perky, voluminous look. Getting a breast lift in conjunction with your implant removal can help ensure that your breasts retain a symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Breast Surgery Revision

Breast surgery revision may be necessary as your breasts age, your skin changes, or if implant integrity changes. There are a handful of options for revision including breast lift, breast reduction, and revision of your breast augmentation. Unfortunately, breast implants are not designed to last forever, so at some point, you may need a revision of your initial surgery. This is a patient-specific issue; no one knows exactly how long a breast implant will last.

How Do I Know If I Need Implant Replacement?

If you think you may have a ruptured or deflated implant, please remember that this is not a medical emergency. It is recommended that you have the implant removed sooner than later; most women have the implant replaced. Some women opt to have their implants completely removed instead of replaced. Because there are a variety of surgical options available, Dr. Burgess must evaluate you and review your surgical goals before a plan can be made.

Internal Bra Reinforcement

Whether you’re having implants removed or undergoing a revision, an internal bra can provide added support as your body adjusts. Using dissolvable mesh such as DuraSorb or GalaFLEX, this technique reinforces weakened or stretched tissue and helps maintain a pleasing breast contour.

  • DuraSorb offers short-term structural support, ideal for patients who need help stabilizing tissue post-implant removal but want a material that dissolves within months. Its monofilament mesh supports the healing process and encourages tissue regeneration. It is FDA-approved for soft tissue support but used off-label in breast procedures.

  • GalaFLEX may be chosen in revision surgeries where longer-term support is needed—particularly if the tissue has thinned over time or there’s been prior scarring. It provides a firm, supportive base that gradually dissolves as the body heals. GalaFLEX is also FDA-approved for soft tissue reinforcement but used off-label in the breast.
