The recovery following surgery depends on the type of surgery you have. The following information is basic recovery instructions, so make sure you communicate with your surgeon and/or nurse for specific details.
Breast Surgery Recovery
After breast surgery, take it easy for the first few days, keeping your upper body elevated and avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activity. Wear the recommended surgical bra for support and comfort, as it helps reduce swelling and stabilize the area. Follow any pain management instructions and medication schedule Dr. Burgess provided, and make sure to attend your follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.
Body Surgery Recovery
For body surgeries like tummy tucks or liposuction, limit movement initially and avoid any bending or heavy lifting to protect the surgical area. Keep your compression garment on as directed to minimize swelling. Hydrate well, follow a balanced diet to support healing, and gently walk to encourage circulation when you feel comfortable.
Face Surgery Recovery
After facial surgery, keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and apply cold compresses as directed to minimize bruising. Avoid bending forward, lifting heavy objects, or strenuous activity to prevent pressure on your face. Follow your Dr. Burgess’ guidelines for wound care, keep the incisions clean, and avoid makeup or skincare products until approved by your provider.
Deductible: The out-of-pocket balance that you will have to pay in full for specific health services prior to your health insurance paying. Your insurance may help pay for certain preventive health services, such as labs, health screenings, or medications prior to your deductible being met. However, for non-preventative or high-cost services such as hospital stays, surgery, or emergency care, it is the patient’s responsibility to provide payment in full until the deductible is met. You may have two different deductibles, an in-network deductible and an out-of-network deductible.
For example, if your insurance plan has a $3,000 deductible, you will be solely responsible for paying $3,000 towards your healthcare costs before your insurance begins to share the cost.
Co-insurance: This refers to the amount, usually a percentage, that is the patient’s responsibility for a medical service once the deductible has been met. Your co-insurance cost may vary depending on the health service. (imaging, surgery, hospital stays, etc.)
For example, Jane Doe’s co-insurance for surgery is 20% after her deductible. Her deductible is $5,000 and she has already paid $4,000 towards her deductible. The billed amount for her surgery was $10,000. Jane will have to pay $1,000, to meet her deductible, and then 20% of the remaining $9,000 due. So, for Jane’s $10,000 surgery, she will pay $2,800 and her insurance will pay $7,200.
Out-of-pocket Maximum (OOPM): Most insurance plans have an OOPM which is the max amount you will pay before your insurance pays for your health services in full. All the payments made towards your deductible, copays, co-insurance are applied to your OOPM. You may have two different OOPMs, an in-network OOPM and an out-of-network OOPM.
For example, Jane’s deductible is $5,000 and her OOPM is $7,500. She has paid $6,000 in copays, co-insurance, and prescriptions. Her deductible has been met, and she has paid an additional $1,000 in expenses. She will be responsible for another $1,500 in shared costs with her insurance until she hits her OOPM, then her insurance will pay for her health services in full.
Surgery Bills: You will receive multiple bills after your surgery. Dr. Burgess is not an employee of Legacy Health, Providence Health, Center for Specialty Surgery, or Wilshire Surgery Center. You could receive up to four different bills regarding your surgery: facility (operating room and other affiliated charges), anesthesia, surgeon (Dr. Burgess), and pathology. Please be aware that payment to the facility, anesthesia, and/or pathology is not payment for the surgical services provided by Dr. Burgess and vice versa. Payment plans are available for Dr. Burgess’ billed amount and can be set up through her billing service, Service Plus. If you have any questions regarding a bill you have received, please contact the phone number on the bill first.
