Breast Reduction in Portland & Lake Oswego
Some women have large, heavy breasts that can create an unbalanced appearance, limit activities, and cause painful physical symptoms. These symptoms may include back pain, neck pain, bra strap grooving, and rashes under their breasts.
These women can turn to Dr. Elisa Burgess for breast reduction in the Portland area. Dr. Burgess understands there are multiple reasons to undergo breast reduction, including:
- Decrease overall breast volume for women who feel their breasts are too large or heavy for their body type
- To assist in alleviating the signs and symptoms of having large breasts
- Attempt to create symmetry between two unequal breasts
- Reduce the size of the areola
Vertical Breast Reduction (Lollipop Scar)
A vertical breast reduction involves removing excess skin, fat, and breast tissue via a two-part incision. This incision pattern looks similar to a “lollipop” shape and has less scarring. Liposuction is usually done along the bra rolls and toward the side of the body. Dr. Burgess then elevates the nipple and reduces the areola size, as well as lifting the breast. Sutures are then used to close the incisions, and are covered with gauze and tape.
Standard Breast Reduction (Anchor Scar)
A standard or full breast reduction involves an anchor-shaped incision. This is a three-part incision, first going around the areola, then from the areola to the base of the breast, and along the crease underneath the breast. Through this incision, Dr. Burgess will remove skin, fat, and breast tissue. Liposuction is usually done along the bra rolls and toward the side of the body. Dr. Burgess then elevates the nipple and reduces the areola size, as well as lifting the breast. Sutures are used to close the incisions and are covered with gauze and tape.
Internal Bra Support After Reduction
During breast reduction surgery, supporting the newly shaped breast can help preserve surgical results. An internal bra, placed using absorbable mesh such as DuraSorb or GalaFLEX, may be recommended for patients with larger or heavier breasts, or those with naturally lax tissue.
-
DuraSorb is a soft, sterile monofilament mesh that dissolves relatively quickly while encouraging tissue regeneration. It offers temporary internal support during the early stages of healing, helping to maintain breast shape without remaining in the body long-term. Although FDA-approved for general soft tissue support, it is considered off-label when used in breast surgery.
-
GalaFLEX provides stronger, more enduring internal support for patients who may be at higher risk of recurrent sagging. Its knitted structure integrates with the surrounding tissue over a longer period, making it a great choice for cases involving significant reshaping. GalaFLEX is also FDA-approved for soft tissue reinforcement but used off-label in the breast.
