What Is Breast Revision?
Breast revision surgery is a secondary surgical procedure to correct problems with, or improve on the results of, a previous breast surgery. There are several reasons patients choose to undergo breast revision, including a change in aesthetic preferences or implant complications. Breast implants are not lifetime devices, so most patients who have had a primary breast augmentation will need a breast revision at some point.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Revision?
There are many benefits to breast revision. They vary depending on your goals, but may include:
- Updating to newer breast technology
- Improving the breasts’ appearance
- Aligning breast shape, symmetry, and size to current aesthetic preferences
- Increasing breast comfort
- Swapping for bigger or smaller implants
- Changing implant shape or material
- Addressing pregnancy- or age-related breast changes
- Resolving breast implant complications
- Possible breast implant illness (BII) or complications

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Revision?
If you are experiencing breast implant complications (capsular contracture, rippling, displacement) or if you are simply dissatisfied with the size, shape, or general appearance of your implants, you are likely a candidate for breast revision surgery.
Reasons patients seek breast revision surgery include:
- Bottoming out: When the breast implant sags in its pocket, crossing below the breast crease.
- Capsular contracture: When the natural scar tissue surrounding the implant hardens, tightens, or thickens excessively.
- Implant rupture: When the silicone shell of the implant tears, causing the silicone gel or saltwater solution to leak out.
- Implant malposition: When the breast implants rotate or slip out of place.
- Double bubble deformity: When the implant and natural breast tissue misalign vertically, creating two distinct bulges in the breast.
- Symmastia: when the implants are too close and merge at the midline or cleavage, creating a “uniboob.”
- Lifestyle changes: For example, to enhance athletic performance or increase mobility.
- Implant material change.
- Desire for implant size increase or decrease.
Good candidates for breast revision surgery are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations.

What Are My Breast Revision Options?
Breast revision surgery is usually an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on your surgical plan, incisions are typically made on top of the incisions from your primary breast augmentation.
Breast revision surgery is highly customizable, since patients’ needs and reasons for seeking breast revision vary widely. Dr. Burgess will work with you during your consultation to determine which approach will best suit your goals.
- Breast Implant Replacement: Many patients choose to replace old implants with new ones. This allows patients to change the type of implant used, including its size, shape (round or teardrop), and material (saline, silicone, gummy bear).
- Breast Implant Exchange with Lift: Some patients also get a breast lift in addition to upgrading their implants for the ultimate breast rejuvenation.
- Breast Implant Adjustment: Your breast implant placement can be changed from above to below the muscle, or vice versa.
- Capsulectomy: This removes both the implant and the surrounding capsule (natural scar tissue). It’s designed to address complications such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, or breast implant illness (BII).
- Capsulorrhaphy: This technique reshapes and tightens the capsule. It can correct implant malposition, asymmetry, symmastia, rippling, and more.
- Breast Implant Removal with Lift: For patients who no longer want implants, including a breast lift can shape and elevate the breasts to maintain their aesthetic.
- Breast Implant Removal Only: Some patients simply wish to have their implants removed, whether as a result of complications or because they’ve changed their preferences.
What Is Breast Revision Recovery Like?
Recovery from breast revision surgery is often similar to that of your initial breast augmentation. You’ll likely leave the surgical center wearing a support bra or surgical dressings. Drains may be placed to collect excess fluid.
Many patients can return to work at a desk job after one or two weeks. You’ll need to get plenty of rest during the first few weeks of recovery, taking care to avoid strenuous activity. Additionally, you will be restricted from raising your arms for several weeks to avoid disturbing the surgical site.
Dr. Burgess and her team will provide you with detailed postoperative instructions, including information on incision care, medication, and all activity restrictions. For an optimal recovery, it’s essential to follow these instructions carefully.
When Will I See My Breast Revision Results?
Swelling is the most persistent side effect and tends to obscure your initial results. After about six weeks, swelling will largely resolve, your breasts will soften and feel more natural, and implants (if you got them) will settle into place.
If your breast revision was done to address implant complications, you should feel relief from your symptoms. This includes capsular contracture pain and possibly breast implant illness symptoms. As you progress in your recovery, you can expect to continue feeling better.
It can take six months to a year for full recovery—for your breasts to settle into their final position and normalize. Scars usually take several months to heal and fade. With proper care, scars should fade until barely noticeable within a year or two.
